You may have a preconception that the construction industry is only looking for a certain type of person, but did you know that an extra 32,000 construction workers are needed across the South West before 2025? With lots of new developments on the horizon (literally), the sector is crying out for fresh faces across a range of managerial, professional, technical and skilled trades.
Building Greater Exeter was set up to support the local construction sector to meet its skilled labour requirements, both now and in the future. The project is a partnership of local authorities, training or education providers and construction companies, and is hosted and supported by Exeter City Council. Since its launch in 2018, Building Greater Exeter has delivered many positive outcomes: supporting young people, job seekers and people interested in construction to understand the opportunities that are available within the construction industry and the built environment.
Building Greater Exeter hold a Construction Job Shop at Exeter Works every Wednesday between 10am – 2pm. This timeslot is available for anyone seeking employment and/or training to drop in and discuss opportunities within the sector across the Greater Exeter area. They are joined each month by RGB Recruitment and different construction employers to provide further information and support. To date they have engaged with 55 interested people, of all ages, and assisted 5 young people into apprenticeships. They also recently re-launched their job shop page on their website, connecting users quickly to local employment and training opportunities.
